  • Listen and Choose a Response

  1. Write for an Academic Discussion
  2. Listen to an Academic Talk
  3. Take an Interview

According to paragraph 2, why did early farmers in the region begin storing grain in clay pots?

  • ATo trade it with nearby villages
  • B.To protect it from moisture and pests正解
  • C.To measure harvests for taxes
  • DTo keep seeds for religious ceremonies

解説

Paragraph 2 says the pots kept grain dry and out of reach of rodents through the wet season. Taxes are mentioned only in paragraph 4, as a result of larger harvests, so option C describes a later development, not the reason the pots were first used.

Write an Email

You recently joined a weekend volunteer group that cleans up a local park. The organizer, Ms. Carter, has asked members for ideas to get more people involved.

Write an email to Ms. Carter. In your email, do the following:

  • Introduce yourself and say why you joined the group
  • Suggest one way to attract more volunteers
  • Ask a question about the next clean-up day

Write as much as you can and in complete sentences.

Dear Ms. Carter, My name is Mina and I joined the park clean-up group two weeks ago. I joined because I walk in the park every morning and I was sad to see so many plastic bottle on the grass. I think we can attract more volunteers if we make a short video about our work and share it on the community website. Many young people in our neighborhood use social media, so they will see it easily and maybe they want to join. Thank you for organizing this group. I am looking forward to the next clean-up. Best regards, Mina

so many plastic bottleso many plastic bottles「so many」の後には複数名詞が必要です。
  • Introduce yourself and say why you joined the group
  • Suggest one way to attract more volunteers
  • Ask a question about the next clean-up day不足:次のクリーンアップ日についての質問がありません。
「maybe they want to join」ではなく「they may want to join」。
  • so many plastic bottle → so many plastic bottles「Many」の後には複数名詞が来ます。
  • maybe they want to join → they may want to join平叙文で「Maybe」を使うとくだけた印象になります。

Some people say students should take a gap year before starting university. What is your opinion, and why?

I think, um, taking a gap year can be a good idea for some students. For example, if a student works for one year, they can, uh, save money and learn how to manage their time. My cousin did this and she was more focus when she started university. But, um, it is not good for everyone, because some students lose the habit of studying. So, uh, I think it depends on the person and on their plan for the year.
